According to the Red Cross World Disasters Report, the number of natural disasters has increased dramatically in recent years. The statistics below were published in their report from 2003. The chart below does not include figures from 2004 and 2005 which include some of the worst natural disasters in history, including the Tsunamis of December 26, 2004 that killed over 200,000 people living around the Indian Ocean; Hurricane Katrina that devastated the American Gulf Coast in August, 2005; and the earthquakes in Pakistan in October, 2005 whose death toll was last estimated at over 87,000.
